More than 2 million passengers/year
The largest airport in the Azores is the Ponta Delgada terminal on the island of São Miguel. Since 1995, it proudly bears the name of João Paulo II Airport in honor of the Papal visit of 1991.
The Azores is a Portuguese archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean, which is made up of 9 islands. Each of them has its own airport or aerodrome, but Ponta Delgada is the largest of them all. Originally, this airport served as a connecting point between the islands, with only a few flights to the mainland. At that time, it was known as Nordela Airport.
With subsequent expansions, it became the fifth-largest infrastructure of the ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal group, the main reference for airport services in the country.
In 2019, more than 2 million travelers passed through this Azores airport, coming from all over the world. Cities such as Boston, Toronto-Pearson, Gran Canaria and London have regular flights throughout the year. Other destinations, such as Amsterdam, Geneva and Brussels, are active during the high season.
However, the most frequent routes are to Terceira Island (TER) and Lisbon (LIS), which together account for 325 flights per month. This represents 56% of all traffic at Ponta Delgada airport.
